Obstacle detection module

An infrared sensor for detecting objects in front of a module and triggering simple prototype responses.

What it is and how it works

The kit includes one obstacle detection module. Its appearance matches common reflective infrared modules: an emitter produces infrared light and a receiver detects some of the light reflected by an object. Circuitry compares the signal with an adjustable threshold and reports detection.

This usually answers whether an obstacle is detected under the chosen conditions. It does not automatically measure distance in centimetres. Dark, shiny or angled surfaces can produce a different result from white paper at the same distance. Ambient lighting also affects behaviour.

What we can use it for

  • Turn on an indicator when an object approaches a model doorway.
  • Count individual objects passing along a demonstration track.
  • Trigger a warning in a classroom vehicle model approaching an obstacle.

First exercise

Observe the output while moving white card towards the sensor, then repeat with a dark object. Record when detection changes and adjust the trimmer in small steps. Count transitions into detection in software so a stationary object is not counted repeatedly.

Handling notes

Check power, output and ground markings on the actual board. Do not copy another module's pinout based on visual similarity. If supplied at 5 V, its output must not connect directly to ESP32 until a compatible signal level is confirmed. The supplied picture does not specify this module's range.
